India targets 225 GW fro Renewable Energy and 65 GW from wind energy. However, the procurement is through Auctions, which has impacted the financial health of the industry. In the recent auctions, a cap was introduced on the amount bid per kWh. However, now the cap has been done away with and there is room for a better return on investment, provided this policy remains in place. Now bids are also being invited for wind and solar hybrid projects
More than 800 wind masts set up by the government and more than a thousand under the private sector, wind speeds of the order of around 6.5 - 7.5 m/s at 120 m height above ground. Countrywide wind potential assessed at several thousand GW.
